I love working in High Level!
Wildwoods has a beautiful farm just outside of town we work with great people and businesses, but it has some down falls. It is very important
that people coming to work for Wildwoods have a good idea what the town has to offer. This is a industrial area heavily influenced by the oil industry which has not done much to beatify things. The weather is highly variable, we often get a bit of snow in may and then 30 degrees two days later. There are no shortage of hotels lining both sides of the highway and summer rates are reasonable $60-75 for 2 beds. Supplies are expensive in High Level as it’s 9 hours north of Edmonton. There’s a CIBC and Bank of Montreal, pool, muddy rivers, tons of mosquitos, swamps, a decent bar, and many other good things.
The camp is decent with mostly new equipment and great food but remote. We work out of bush camps and move camp 5-6 times per season. Camps are usually roadside so some planters bring campers but mostly it’s tent living for 3 months.
To help with the situation Wildwoods converted the extra barn into a party barn with a climbing wall, stage, bar, drum kit, amps, PA, instruments, and a huge dance floor. Planters are welcome to use the space at all times, and of course Wildwoods throws great parties.
Planting in High Level is typically fast ground with the camp averaging 4000 trees/day. When the land is bad or hard it is usually due to clay or swampy or site prep. To be successful in High Level it takes an extremely positive attitude type planter, this area is not for planters used to hotels, cultured towns or bitching. The hardest part of working in High Level has always been the access. All logging is done in the winter when swamps are frozen so they can plow a road where they need to. The roads are non existent by the time we come in the summer. We have incredible swamp machines that are super safe and new. These machines have powered trailers that can carry the loads of trees or planters. The trailers are very comfortable and extremely safe. Wildwoods also leases its own long ranger helicopter to keep costs down and to have control over the machine and quality of pilot.
